What if I could tell you that you could eat 2000+ calories (kcal) a day and completely transform your body. Would you believe me?! Well guess what – you totally can! And you should be! Most of us need to be eating at least 1800 calories a day. At least! Something I love to teach all my clients is that you don’t need to be in a huge deficit in order to see results. Quite the opposite actually. You most likely won’t see the results you want when you’re eating 1200 calories a day. But we will save that for another post. Today I want to tell you why and how you can eat 1800+ calories and finally start seeing the results you’ve been wanting!
I love giving my clients their maintenance calories to show them what they could eat to maintain their weight and stay the exact same. Of course, when I explain this to them, they are equally terrified and excited. That’s because most have been sitting at 1500 calories or lower for a long period of time. With that being said, it is no surprise that my clients are a little shocked when I tell them that their maintenance calories are well over 2000 calories.
Once I figure out what the maintenance calories, I then figure out a healthy deficit and set of macros for each person, which is typically about 300-500 kcal more than what they are used to, I always get asked… how will I see results when I haven’t seen any yet while eating way less than this? How do I lose inches in my waist eating more? How do I lose weight while eating more? It’s simple really. Unlike a standard diet, body recomposition is a lifestyle in which fitness and nutrition techniques lead to healthy changes in your body's ratio of fat to muscle. Recomposition means “to form something again or in a different way,” hence the term “body recomposition.” To explain it a little further, body recomposition is where you may maintain your same weight while building muscle and lowering your body fat percentage. EXAMPLE: Say you’re 150 pounds and 35% body fat. If you went through a body recomposition process (eating clean and training 4-6x a week), you could end up being 148 pounds and 23% body fat! Your body would look totally different! Totally different but yet still only a 2 pound difference. Starting to see what I am getting at?
So yes, the way I approach nutrition and macro coaching may scare you at first, but really your body needs that much fuel anyways. It’s just that most of us have deprived our bodies for so long that of course it’s scary to actually start feeding it. Let’s quit these “crash diets!” They won’t get you anywhere and they are not sustainable. I know it’s tough to eat more than what you’ve been thinking is normal for your body, which is why we need to probably make some mental changes first. Again, we will save that for another blog. It is okay to want to make physical changes to your body, but let’s all do it in a healthy way. One that your body will appreciate. And let’s be real, you never truly enjoy your days where you’re eating 1200 calories… do you?
When it comes to physical changes, let’s work on lowering body fat percentage. Lowering your body fat percentage is going to be how you totally transform your body. Let’s toss those scales and take your measurements instead! Pounds won’t matter when you’re losing body fat and gaining lean muscle (refer to the example I used earlier) but it sure will be nice to see yourself losing inches in your waist or thighs! To wrap up, if you take anything from this post, I want you know that you should eat more, train harder than ever, and then watch the inches melt away!
